Following a recent meeting I attended concerning environmental issues, at the home of my very generous hosts on the edge of Wadebridge, I was alarmed to see how many of us had driven with some spare seats available in our cars. This is to be expected in a rural community, but can easily be fixed through communication and a willingness to lift share.

This week happens to be the first ever Liftshare Week taking place from 4th-8th October.

Liftshare Week aims to encourage and enable more people to discover the benefits of car sharing.

Liftshare is a social enterprise that helps individuals to travel more sustainably by sharing their journey. Their online network matches people with similar journeys so they can travel better together - saving money, cutting their carbon footprint, having fun and making the world a better place.

Liftshare was set up in 1998 by a student, Ali Clabburn, with the initial aim of making more efficient use of the 38 million empty car seats on UK roads every day by encouraging and enabling more people to share their car journeys.

The growth and success of Liftshare’s national network of online car-sharing systems encouraged the development of several more innovative transport solutions, and they now also support and enable trip sharing for bike, taxi and walking journeys.

From humble beginnings on a university notice board, Liftshare is now the largest car-sharing scheme in the UK.

I looked at the Liftshare website and discovered there were 403 journeys you could share, all travelling from within 5 miles of Wadebridge.

What do you think about Liftsharing? Are you bothered about it being better for the environment? Do you find it an inconvenience to Liftshare? Or do you think this is a positive way to travel? Let WadebridgePeople.co.uk know your views.

Lift share is a ciminally under utilised process. I work in Truro and know full well how muych of a difference it could make. The central site should do more to push it to employers - we need signs in the office and weekly email bulletin updates!
