Proposal to stop vehicles using main street in Wadebridge

This is the third time I’ve written about cars using Molesworth Street in Wadebridge. It would appear to be a popular news item as this week it has made the front page of the Cornish Guardian.

Cars using Wadebridge Main Street
On the very same day as this front page story was published I witnessed a car drive up Molesworth Street in Wadebridge, pictured above, and park outside a shop where a member of staff then loaded the lady's SUV with some electrical items.
This act did not go unnoticed by other onlookers; the lady in question received some very disapproving looks from many pedestrians. No wonder when you consider that it is an offence to drive up this road. Molesworth Street in Wadebridge is a pedestrian’s area. The only vehicles permitted to use Molesworth Street are vehicles with exempt TAX , emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles and taxi's dropping off and picking up. I do not believe this vehicle fits into any of those categories.
The Devon and Cornwall Police website states that following a PACT/Public consultation meeting in Wadebridge town hall the neighbourhood team will be taking firmer action against offending drivers as requested by the public. The consultation was arranged with the town council, Cornwall highways and Councillor Scott Mann. Over 100 people attended and gave good views and opinions about the proposals for the street.
The neighbourhood team will initially send out warning letters to offending drivers and if they re-offend a £30 fixed penalty ticket will be issued.
Since that initial meeting Wadebridge residents have demanded traffic be barred from the main street and a barrier erected to enforce the ban.
The results of a recent survey released this week shows that 90% of residents want vehicles banned from Molesworth Street, with the only concession made to vehicles delivering to business premises. Police also support restrictions on Molesworth Street.
The results have been forwarded to a working group who are looking to update the town plan for further action. This will then be passed to Cornwall Council to instigate.
Comments
The lady was loading some small electrical items into the car. Wadebridge Police have informed me that there is a loading area to the back of the store which staff should encourage customers to use, think they need a bit of encouragement in that direction... The town's residents would like to fully pedestrianise the street. It does work in Truro.

ReportOut of interest, how long was the lady parked on the street? It doesn't sound like regular use is appropriate, but I can kind of sympathise with someone just nipping through for two minutes in an effort to save putting their back out. Are they looking for the street to be fully pedestrianised? That seems to have worked in Truro.
