TRIBUTE CORNWALL CUP:
Newquay Hornets 22, Bude 33
In their first competitive match of the season, the two sides provided the Bank Holiday crowd with a very entertaining Cornwall Cup encounter at the Sports Centre on Saturday, writes Richard Trewella.
With two pre-season friendly matches behind them, Bude ran out winners by five tries to the Hornets' four.
Both sides passed the ball well from the start. Hornets took the game to Bude and their back row of Pendreich, Perkins and Rainey was effective in stifling the visitors' attacks.
For the Hornets, young scrum half Connor Riley looked sharp, he opened his side's account after 15 minutes when he slipped through a big open side gap at a ruck on half way to run in under the posts. Liam Freeman converted.
Bude replied through left winger Jago Cann on the half hour; and within five minutes Cann had taken advantage of a defensive lapse to add another try. Winger Dan Pearce converted both tries to put Bude 14-7 up.
On 37 minutes wing Rob McIntyre fielded a Bude clearance in his own half to set up a try for centre Fraser Kelllythorn, then within two minutes the Bude defence drawn to the open side, McIntyre popped up again to exploited the blind side and run in a try from half way to make it 17-14 at the break.
The third quarter was all Bude. Hornets came under increasing pressure in the set piece; they just couldn't get their hands on the ball.
They kept Bude out until 59 minutes, when a speculative kick from Bude's Acker Martin provided a fortuitous bounce near the Hornets' line. It eluded the defence and Olly Denford grabbed the ball and dotted down to put Bude back in the lead.
Provider turned try scorer within a couple of minutes when Martin took an inside pass from Dan Pearce to touchdown wide out on the right. Excellent conversions from Pearce helped to extend Bude's lead to 17-28.
Then Hornets came to life again in the fourth quarter. They camped in the Bude 22 for ten minutes before McIntyre gave wing James Barker the scoring pass in the left corner in injury time. Then right at the end Bude's pack mauled to the Hornets' line and Pearce slipped over in the corner for his side's fifth try.
Hornets play their first league match of the season at home against Tavistock on Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Running
PRIZES GALORE FOR NEWQUAY RUNNERS:
The final event of the successful inaugural Duchy Athletic Network (DAN) 5K series took place on Hayle Beach last Wednesday with an out and back course. The runners experienced a fairly strong south westerly wind against them for the last half of the race, by Paul Wright.
This final race in the series attracted the largest field and this was probably as a result of runners being aware it would be a flat course from start to finish, almost unheard of in Cornwall.
As I am sure most people are aware, running on sand is pretty tough and the first mile was particularly so. Thankfully, the final two-thirds of the race offered the runners some respite as the sand was much firmer under foot.
Leading home a field of 151 runners in fine style was St Austell's Dan Alsop in 18.38 who had quite a lead on 2nd placed Colin Snook, Cornwall AC 19.12 and third placed Mile High Runner Richard Pascoe 19.39. First Newquay Runner home was Jonas Gummesson in 6th place with colleague Steve Marks taking eighth.
The ladies race was won by under 17 athlete Isobel Steele from Falmouth Road Runners in an impressive 21.40 with St Austell's Josephine Gilbert, also under 17, in 2nd place in 22.38 and under 15 runner, currently without a club, Alisha Johnson in 23.29.
Newquay had 11 runners who all ran well, including in-form Ricky Hitchens who decided to give the event a go despite suffering from man-flu! Jonas Gummesson finished the series 4th overall out of the 195 athletes who competed in at least one race.
Wietske Hitchens was 10th lady overall in the series out of the 118 ladies who competed in at least one race. There were overall category prizes for the following:
Sophie Talling – 3rd under 15 female, Wietske Hitchens 2nd under 50 female and Lisa Talling 3rd in the same category.
David Wooldridge 1st under 60 male, Peter Allen 2nd in the same category and Paul Wright 1st under 70 male.
Newquay Road Runners' times and overall positions:
6th Jonas Gummesson 19.49 – 5th male under 40; 8th Steve Marks 20.15 – 7th male under 40; 35th Steve Rendle 22.35 – 11th male under 50; 42nd Tom Crawford 22.56 – 13th male under 40; 44th Dave Wooldridge 23.04 – 1st male under 60; 54th Peter Allen 23.36 – 2nd male under 60.

Cycling
NEWQUAY VELO CLUB:
Four riders from Newquay Velo rode in Race no.11 of The Cornish Race Series at St Eval Kart Track last Wednesday, in two different races that both showed some terrific riding.
The men's Cat 4 mixed in the same race as the ladies. No ladies racing from Newquay Velo this time, but for the men's, Mark Scofield and Jason Wall put in some great efforts.
From the start Mark Scofield (Scoie) led putting in a strong attack when he powered away and led the rest of the bunch around at a strong consistent pace. Wall, stayed in the middle of the pack playing a more tactical game which later paid off.
As the laps progressed, Scoie started to loose his lead, maybe because of having rode most of the race on the front, but it was Wall's turn, working his way through the bunch with only nine minutes to go.
Scoie fell back to third with Wall sweeping through and putting himself in second spot and there he stayed into the last seven minutes of the race, finishing 2nd and Scoie 5th both completing their first Crit race for Velo.
The Cat 1/2/3 men's race again was an explosion right from the start, forty minutes of tactical riding. Mark Barlow and Scott Tomkinson from Velo, had their work cut out with two very strong elites in the mix, Gary Chambers and Chris Opie, this made a high quality field.
Cat 1, Tomkinson, starting in the yellow jersey, rode with immense pace off the front with team mate Barlow, with Ricki Pascoe – One & All, Chris Opie- Primal and Gary Chambers – Willier Big Maggie, following.
For a number of laps this first bunch rode hard to fight for position. Fifteen minutes in, Opie made a lone break showing such amazing strength, power and speed, tomkinson showed incredible courage and strength when he went with him and stayed with Opie for 20 minutes.
Tomkison later said: "It was hard as he was going full gas." This showed as Tomkinson had to ease back letting Opie go.
After that it was Opie's race, no one could stay with him, he just made it look like light work. Barlow and Chambers were still riding close together until the bell for the last lap.
A great ride by Tomkinson finishing fourth and still keeping the yellow jersey. Opie was first, Chambers second and Barlow third. Great riding form Newquay Velo.
The next Cornish Series Race will be at Portreath on Saturday September 10.

A great game saw Zodiac Interiors take the lead through Josh Harris. EEC fought back and were level just after half time thanks to a great strike from Tom Currah.
The game could have gone either way but it went in the favour of Zodiac who scored late on through Ross Fallons to win the match and the Cup. Well done to Zodiac and good luck next season.

Golf
NEWQUAY GOLF CLUB:
After all the excitement of Golf week, Newquay Golf Club had tournaments for monarchists and republicans alike.
First up the rovers returned for the Coronation Cup which was an event right up Ray Pipe's street. Ray shot a stunning 45 points to win the crown with Carl White and Simon Dowling in joint second place with 43 points apiece. In fourth spot was Owen Allen with 41 points.
This was a day of great scoring with any score over 36 indicating that the player had played below their handicap.
Ninety-five players had teed up on the day and unusually it was the first hole which played the hardest with the third hole playing the easiest and giving up most pars whilst the 15th hole was birdied the most.
After the monarchists' day it was time for the President's Cup and 90 republicans teed it up for this Stableford event which saw 26 of those players playing below their handicap.
Winning the cup with a solid 43 points was Haydn Brown with Jim Graham just one point behind in second place with Stewart Lenton in third spot with 41 points.
It was a great day of golf with the 10th playing the easiest, the fourth the hardest, the third gave up most pars and the 15th was birdied the most.
In the midweek medal Justin Bond and Carl Jenkin both shot rounds of 65 with Justin winning on countback with Nigel Dunstan in 3rd place on 67 , four shots clear of Christian Sears in fourth spot.
Shooting a score equal to your age at golf is a cherished ambition and Dave Cole did exactly that in the P.O.T.S. weekly event. P.O.T.S. stands for Midweek Golfers and Dave went stellar as he shot an incredible 49 points to shoot his age.
This is a fantastic score and represents a round of 13 under par! His handicap has been suitably reduced.
Talking of shooting your age Derek Fieldhouse won the Sunday medal with his round of 64 to win on countback from 15-year-old Sean Williams with 16-year-old Joe Miller in third spot with his round of 65.
There are local derbies in sport but the mother of all locals was fought out with Newquay senior men playing an inter-club match at home against Merlin in reasonable weather.
Otherwise known as the crosstown B3274 local derby, this is always a keenly contested match. After a close battle, the Newquay seniors emerged victorious, winning 4½ 3½ matches.
On Tuesday the ladies held their annual invitation day. Sixteen ladies together with their invited guests teed up for a Four Ball Better Ball competition.
Winners were Anne Poole and guest Lynda Simpson with a magnificent 44 points. Second with 40 points were Barbara Fernley and guest Marita Moore and third, with 39 points, were Fiona Pocklington and guest Rose Bailey.
American Football
DREAM BECOMES REALITY:
It has been a long time in the planning but the Cornish Sharks Academy of American Football became a reality when the Junior Varsity Sharks, aged 14-16 years, played their first ever kitted game against the Sussex Thunder at the weekend.
Having only had their kit for three weeks, the youngsters played well losing by only one touchdown, 12-6.
Team Cornwall was made up of players from the Newquay youth team, the Junior Varsity Sharks who played their first competitive game last year in flag football but as coach Brian Smallworth explained, the jump to kitted football is a big leap.
He said: "The youngsters found that catching the ball and running with the football is totally different with kit on and so it took a little while to adapt to the changes in their game.
"The first training session in kit took two hours just to get them fitted properly.
"The Thunder have had kit for two years and so it was a phenomenal result for Team Cornwall and showed they have a good defence.
"With another month of training in kit before their next game, I believe there will be a huge improvement.
"Contact is very different in kitted football and unlike rugby is more a 'collision' sport and our youngsters did well under the attack from the Thunder."
Another first this Saturday was the newly formed St Austell Spartans another Academy team.
They have only been training for three months and do not as yet have their equipment so they played a flag game which is great training for them.
They played extremely well in their first ever competitive game. The starting quarterback is only 13 and this young man at this young age has all the tools to go to the top.
His team's oldest player was 16 and the youngest was ten and they gave the much more experienced Thunder a run for their money.
The Thunder were brilliant sports and laughed when the 10-12 year old cadets came out and ran amok – very difficult to catch the flag on a tiddler and they were the first to score for St Austell.
Smallworth said: "The idea behind the Academy is a simple one. Twelve teams around the county will be set up (so far Newquay and St Austell) with Wadebridge, Falmouth, Penzance and Truro to follow in September.
"These teams will play each other as town teams in a training league, coming together once a month to train as Team Cornwall.
"The best players from around the twelve teams will be selected to play nationally as Team Cornwall in both the Contact and Flag leagues.
"This way transport costs are kept affordable and they have a local identity; however, they are part of a bigger picture, Team Cornwall and part of the Academy, so their rivalry stops once they play outside the county.
"These teams will be the feeders for the County Adult Team, the Cornish Sharks, thus ensuring its sustainability without Americans or imports – all grassroots, home grown talent of which we are considerably blessed in Cornwall."
