TEENAGE full back Will Pengelly scored two tries as Wadebridge Camels gave their hopes of staying in South West One West a massive boost with a convincing victory over their relegation rivals.

A defeat for the Camels would have left them right in the mire towards the foot of the table, but the win, and a bonus point, has lifted them into mid-table and eight points above the drop zone.

There was no sign of what was to come in the opening 10 minutes, as Camels came under severe pressure from a Penryn side desperate to make home advantage count.

However, the visitors survived intact, with Penryn missing a penalty from in front of the posts, and then took the lead in the 14th minute when fly half Adam Collings finished off a fine backs move.

Centre Jamie Grubb missed the conversion, and a kickable penalty, before finding the target on the stroke of half-time to give his side an 8-0 interval lead at the end of a first half which had been played in pretty dismal conditions.

Run

Five minutes into the second half, player-coach Nick Yelland bagged a second try for Camels, with Grubb converting for a 15-0 advantage.

Penryn then put the restart kick straight out of play, and from the resultant scrum on halfway, No.8 Gary Gynn picked up at the base, scrum half Shaun Hawkey went on a darting run, and Pengelly touched down to put the visitors 20 points clear. The 18-year-old Pengelly then scored again after prop Richard Treleaven had ripped the ball out of Penryn's hands. It was fed through seven Camels' players before the youngster finished off a superb score, and Grubb converted.

Both sides had players sin-binned by referee Sara Cox in the second half, with Penryn flanker Jordan Rose getting a yellow card for persistent infringement by his team, and Camels centre Dan Prout punished for pulling down a line-out.

With ten minutes to go, Wadebridge completed the scoring with a try by winger Ashley Rescorla – his first of the season in the league. He raced 60 metres to touch down after Camels had stolen possession inside their own 22.

With this Saturday's scheduled Tribute Cornwall Cup semi-final with Camborne now moved to Saturday March 17, Camels take a break this weekend before entertaining Cleve in the league on March 3.
